"Best we've ever had" says Whizz
Billy Whizz's Wonderboys played out an exciting 0-0 draw against early front runners Arsene-all last night at Shitters Palace, meaning the Wonderboys have conceded just 3 goals in their opening 4 games.
Both managers admitted after the match that a draw was the fair result, with Billy Whizz claiming his defence will be the backbone to any promotion challenge launch by the Wonderboys:
"Unusually for us, we've kept things solid at the back this year, and I believe it's certainly the best backline we've ever had at the club. Conceding less than a goal is a magnificent effort for any club, particularly us, when you look at our goals against columns over the past few seasons. If we can keep that up, we have every chance of promotion."
For every stat, there is a counter-stat however, and in this case it's that the goals scored is also just 3, and after an injury to Luke Grove, there are serious questions whether the Wonderboys will be able to improve this aspect of their game. Whizz admitted that the club's forwards haven't been their best, but is not worried:
"We've been getting shots in, but they've not been hitting the net. We'll have a look at how we're doing things, and see if we can sort that out. Luke will miss 4 league games, so Avery will come in and have another chance to prove himself, but Luke is our talisman and we'll miss him for score. All the team will have to take more responsibility to increase our goals scored - from getting higher quality crosses into the box, to making sure that if you're going to shoot, it's on target, and it's going to make the keeper work, and preferably of course going in. It's not something to blame the forwards for 100%, as a team we have to be better in the final third of the pitch"
Floyd Rooney was also injured, and will not be fit until next Wednesday. David Thorpe could play at right back, or youth player Lewis Moody, a natural right back, could slot in.
The Wonderboys face Speedy Pete FC tonight, before visiting league leaders nottingham forest fc on Friday.
