Safety in touching distance

Billy Whizz's Wonderboys boss Billy Whizz has urged his players to get a result against Romans tonight, to avoid the drama of a last day relegation fight.

The euphoria of last Wednesday was soon forgotten after a football lesson by Earby All Stars on Friday. Following a narrow 1-0 win over Freesun, the 4-0 defeat at Shitters Palace means nerves have been rebuilding amongst Wonderboys supporters, as the Whizzers sit 5 points clear of the relegation zone with 2 games to play.

Although in theory, that sounds like a very healthy position to be in, and one which surely many fans would have settled for at the beginning of the season, the manner of the defeat 2 days ago has set back confidence - which is why manager Billy Whizz is insistent that his team must win tonight.

Romans are 15th in the league, and are only 3 points from safety - 6 from the Whizzers.

"It's going to be very much touch and go I think, and if you played the final 2 games 100 times, I think you would have many, many different outcomes" said Whizz.

"For example, if we lose to Romans tonight, they have Marinos the last game of the season, who they would be confident of beating, and they could be above us if we lose to Kingtown as well."

"Thats why we need to turn up tonight. Yes, it will a nervy affair, but we're so close, it would be a tragedy if we fall away now. Last time round we beat Romans fairly comfortably, but it will be a whole new kettle of fish tonight. They've just picked up a great result, while we've been flattened."

Willowvale and Bristol, who sit 13th and 14th, both have 38 points, 5 less than the Whizzers, face Hurworth Palace and Skills City respectively. Hurworth have been in poor form of late, while Skills are in 11th place, below the Wonderboys on goal difference.

"It's been an up and down season, and it's amazing how close this division really is. We've had some cracking results against some top teams, but equally we've let ourselves down in some games, and it's that lack of consistency thats put us where we are. Although we're talking about relegation now, if we pick up a win tonight, then we'll have passed our points target we set 12 weeks ago, and a top half finish is still a possibility."
