Whizz: Adaptability is key

Wonderboys boss undlerlines economic lessons learnt

Billy Whizz's Wonderboys manager Billy Whizz admitted that the economic forces in the TM world have taken him by surprise, and says the club will move forward with greater awareness of the financial situation.

When asked what how he had developed as a manager this season, Whizz replied "The importance of the game finances was underestimated by myself; perhaps more than ever in this difficult climate. It just goes to show how finances dictate every decision made in the day to day running of the club, and other than the 270 minutes on the pitch, the club is basically controlled by economics"

"Perhaps before, we were rather small minded in our approach, now we realise how we must take stock of the world situation, and then change if necessary, and I think we've started to do that by downgrading our YD....it's no longer sensible for a club of our size to have such high facilities, it's much cheaper to buy off the Transfer List"

As a student in Economics, Whizz is quick to express his thoughts on how the TM economic situation would develop, but revealed that the club had been too slow in changing their strategy in line with the slump in prices:

"In hindsight, yes, mistakes were made. We concentrated on our own strategy, and didn't realise that everybody moaning would actually affect us - it does, finances affect everyone. The signs were there to be read, but the chairman and I thought we had a good foundation, and were building upwards, in the future we will be much more wary of how things will change, and where it will leave us, both on and off the field. Adaptability is crucial, you have to have the ability to change if necessary"

"In the short term, I think it's fair to say that funding will be short over the next season or two. We have to decide whether to grin and bear it, and accept that things won't be great for a while, or to be proactive, and invest in some younger players while prices are cheap. It's a really difficult decision to make, but being stuck with a team full of 30 year olds is no good in today's world; previously it's fine, but now it's clear that younger players from the TL is the better way to go."

"We can't change instantly however, and the chairman and I have to decide whether to drop the oldies completely, or see if we can achieve our goals with an older team. In reality, a balance will have to be found I think"

Whizz happy with draw

Rivals fail to close gap after hardworking performance

Billy Whizz's Wonderboys yesterday managed to claim a point away against one of their promotion rivals, Man Utd SER, meaning the gap between the Whizzers and 3rd is 6 points, with 7 games to play.

The Whizzers made a strong start, but fell behind midway through the first half, and were forced to hold on for much of the game. However, a late rally resulted in Luke Groves heading home an equalizer, and earning a vital point for the Wonderboys.

"I think the most important thing from tonight was the fact we'v kept Man Utd 8 points behind us" said Whizz in his post match interview. "They've been in great form, and still have a great chance of finishing inside the top 2, and I'm pleased that gap is still there. With a loss, they would only be 5 points behind us, and momentum would have shifted. We're very much in control of our own destiny now"

The result means that the Whizzers good run of form continues, and Wonderboys fans can begin to count down the wins required to ensure promotion for their team. 5 wins will mean Arsene-all, in 3rd place, will need to win all their 7 games to finish on the same points as the Whizzers, and it is likely that 4 wins will be enough to move the Wonderboys up to Division 4.

"I'm sure people will get their calculators out, and predict where points will come from, but at the end of the day, if we win enough games, then we'll be there. On paper, our run in looks the most challenging, but we've beaten some good teams this year, and with promotion on the line, we should be able to step up a gear or two" said Whizz.

The Wonderboys also confirmed the signing of Rob Liddell last night. Liddell, 27, plays DML, but Whizz explained why he was brought to Shitters Palace, despite having O'Reilly and Hawthorn in that position:

"While it may look a strange signing, Liddell represents a bargain. He will be good cover over the next few games, particularly with O'Reilly injured, and should bring us a decent profit if we sell him on in a few weeks. It wasn't a necessity purchase, more that we should get a really good selling price for him."

Thr-easy does it for Whizzers

Convincing 3-0 win keeps Wonderboys in pole position

Billy Whizz's Wonderboys eased to a 3-0 win over esaf on Wednesday night, taking advantage of favourable results elsewhere.

Goals from O'Reilly, Richards and Groves set up the victory, although a Man of the Match performance from Leese ensured a comfortable evening for the hosts, meaning 25 points out of a possible 27 have been amassed from the last 9 league games.

"It was a solid performance" said manager Billy Whizz. "With players returning from injury, confidence is high, and every win is crucial now. It's important that we continue this streak as long as we can, because as we see so often in football, teams can crumble in the final stages"

One sour note for the Wonderboys was the injury to O'Reilly, and Whizz confirmed it could rule the Irish defender out for the remainder of the season:

"It's a pretty bad one, and he'll be lucky to play again this season. It's difficult to say currently, but it's a real shame, as he was playing some good football, and contributing to a good team run."

The promotion charge continues tonight against Boca Juniors. David Thorpe is likely to deputise for O'Reilly, with Hawthorn likely to be pushed up to DML.

Wonderboys looking to strengthen lead

Whizz wanting team to extend unbeaten run

Billy Whizz's Wonderboys will play esaf at Shitters Palace tonight, hoping for a similar scoreline to the last time the sides met - when the Whizzers came away 4-0 winners. While such a win will be welcome, most Wonderboys fans would settle for even the narrowest of 1-0 wins.

"It's getting to the stage in the season where points are more important than performances" said manager Billy Whizz. "Early on in the season, you want to play well, because it can set a tone of whats to follow, but now its about getting as many positive results as you can"

Points is certainly something the Whizzers have collected in abundance in recent weeks, with 22 points gained out of a possible 24 in the last 8 games.

"We're on a bit of a roll at the minute, but its crucial the players keep their feet on the ground. The moment we turn up expecting a win, or thinking promotion is in the bag, is the moment it all starts to go wrong. The coaching staff and myself have continued to work the players hard; they must thrive under the pressure, yet enjoy themselves, and bring back the result required"

Goalkeeper Leese will return for the Wonderboys tonight, and Whizz believes the confidence around the camp is growing with each injured player coming back into the first team surroundings:

"It helps for sure. While Preda has improved a lot over the last couple of weeks, Leese is our first choice goalie, and it should help the defence as a whole. Bin Whizzer should return on Friday, which is another plus, with no injuries or bans tonight we should be able to name our strongest team for the first time in a long long time"

Indeed, should the Wonderboys get through tonight's game unscathed, and bin Whizzer starts on Friday, it will be the first time since the 4th game of the season, the 0-0 draw against Arsene-all way back on the 4th May that Whizz will have a fully fit squad at his disposal, something which further shows the hard work put in by Whizz and his staff.

Whizz: Groves has made the difference

Whizz cites striker as Wonderboys key player

Billy Whizz has stated his belief that the fitness of Luke Groves has helped his team launch a remarkable promotion push into Division 4.

The 30 year old has been at Shitters Palace since Season 19, scoring 86 goals for the Wonderboys in exactly 150 appearances. Despite early season fitness worries, the striker has returned to his best form, with 12 goals this season, in just 14 games, in addition to 2 assists.

"Luke Grove has been an ace striker for several seasons now" said Whizz in the Team of the Season interview, "If you look at his goalscoring and productivity this season, it has been sensational. It's not until he returns from injury you realise how much a quality striker was missed, and how much they add to your team."

The Wonderboys have amassed an incredible 22 points out of a possible 24 in their last 8 games, and Whizz is eager for his side to push on, as the closing stages of the season approach:

"[Tactics] might change later, but at the minute the aim is to keep going, and build a lead in top place"

BWW blog can also confirm that Whizz has called off a deal for Chris Webber, the MK Dons right midfielder. Webber, 21 had been eyed as a replacement for the retiring Maurice Meredith, and a fee had been agreed with MK Dons, yet Whizz will chance his arm on the Transfer List, in the hope of a cheaper price.

The Wonderboys face esaf at Shitters Palace tomorrow night.

Narrow win keeps Wonderboys top

Wonderboys extend lead from 3rd after comeback

Billy Whizz's Wonderboys remain top of 5.10 after coming from behind to beat Cornfield Rovers 2-1 last night.

Enver 'The Rock' Mandirah was banned, so David Thorpe reclaimed a place in the starting XI, playing at his more natural centre half, while Phillipe Konz returned on left wing. However, the Whizzers started sluggishly, and it was no suprise when Rovers took the lead, as Foster headed home a Gaugarin corner.

The goal woke up the visitors though, and some nice football was played in search of an equaliser. Fribo sent two freekicks narrowly wide, while Inchingolo and Groves both had headers saved by Barton, the Rover's keeper. The scores were back level on 43 minutes though, when Luke Grove powered home Fribo's curling freekick, giving the striker his 12th goal of the season, in just 14 games.

The Wonderboys carried on pressing after the interval, and it was apparent that the hosts would sit back, and try to hold onto their point. Mick Richards missed his shot after nice work from Konz, while Groves also wasted 2 opportunites to give the Whizzers the lead. The game then slowed down a little, and all of a sudden time was beginning to become an issue if the Wonderboys wanted to claim all three points. Frustration started to set in, with Incingolo receiving a yellow card, and O'Reilly missing a header from close range. However, in form Rooney made a great pass through to Richards, who curled beyond Barton and ran to the Whizzers fans. The importance of this goal was understood by all, and may just prove to be crucial when all is said and done at the end of the season.

The hosts failed to launch any kind of enslaught at the Wonderboys goal in the closing stages, failing to have another shot in the game, and the final whistle was treated with cheers from the visiting fans, who saw their team remain in 1st place in the league, and now 4 points clear of 3rd with 10 games to go.

Complacency no issue says Whizz

Whizzers remain top despite lacklustre performance

Billy Whizz defended his side last night, after a disappointing 1-1 draw against bottom of the table Baldies.

The Wonderboys took an early lead through captain Morten Fribo, but a 94th minute equaliser was the least the hosts deserved, after Luke Groves conceded a penalty for a foul on Lofthouse. The point keeps the Whizzer's top of the league, as the chasing pack all drew also, and manager Billy Whizz decided to point out the positives rather than focus specifically on the match itself:

"We didn't play as well as we would have liked to no, but we've played some excellent football over the last couple of weeks - six consecutive wins before tonight shows the effort the players have been putting in. Tonight we looked a little tired, and we sat back after our goal, rather than really keeping the pressure up and killing the game. We were too content with the 1-0 scoreline, when we should have gone for more."

"I'm not knocking anyone tonight though, we're still top of the league, and its another game gone. We'll look to bounce back with a win Sunday, and keep confidence high, because obviously, we want to stay in 1st place"

With 11 games to play, the Whizzers have 44 points, 2 ahead of 3rd placed Skills City, who have 42 points. The Wonderboys face Cornfield Rovers away on Sunday night, with a chance to extend their lead, as Skills play 2nd placed Arsene-all.

Whizzers prepare for top v bottom match up

Players urged to keep their heads in bid for seventh straight win

Billy Whizz's Wonderboys are set to play their first league game since climbing into first place in 5.10, as they go head to head against bottom of the table Baldies.

The Wonderboys beat nottingham forest fc 2-1 on Wednesday night, courtesy of goals from Cort and Groves, and will hope to improve on the 0-0 draw earlier in the season against Baldies, at Shitters Palace. Baldies keeper Harper won Man of the Match that day, but Whizz is hoping for a little more luck tonight:

"That was a weird game, we weren't at our best, and it seemed like one of those days. We were becoming more and more frustrated, so we switched off at the back, and they could easily have taken all three points. If we're focussed and patient tonight, then hopefully we can go one better"

The Wonderboys will welcome back Giovanni Inchingolo into their starting XI in the place of David Thorpe, while James Cort will remain in left wing after his superb performance against forest.

It can also be confirmed that the Whizzers are in negotiations with 2 clubs over the signing of a right midfielder. Maurice Meredith will retire at the end of the season, leaving the Wonderboys with a gap in their team, but are in advanced stages of agreeing a purchasing price. It is thought that the deal would happen at the end of the season, but nothing has been agreed yet.

Wonderboys top: Whizz reaction

A nervy 2-1 win meant the Whizzers leapfrogged Skills into top place. Manager Billy Whizz gives his reaction

"It's a tremendous achievement" said Whizz, who has been managing the Wonderboys since their creation in Season 19. "We had 4 key games, and we've won them all; as a manager you can't ask for more than that from your players"

"When you consider also the player injuries we've had this season, I think it just highlights further the team determination - everybody is there to do a job, and the team is number one. It's an attitude that has perhaps been missing at key moments over the last couple of seasons, and I'm pleased it has returned"

"The pressure is now very much on the players to keep it up though. Our next game is no less important that the last one. Now we are top of the table, we have to start playing like league leaders, and ensuring that we stay there, it would be so easy to let our performances slip, and move back down to 3rd or 4th"

"While we are planning for next season, we need to keep focussed and we realise that this season is the most important thing right now. Fans can be assured that the team promotion effort is number one, and we would do nothing to jeopardise that. Players will have to be moved on at the end of the season, but certainly not while there are crucial points up for grabs - we have worked so hard to be in the position we're in, and now we're desperate to keep hold of top spot"

Whizz: Season end planning under way

Manager confirms 'homework being done'

Billy Whizz has today revealed that possible transfer targets for the Whizzers next season are already being examined, in a Team of the Season interview, due to be released tomorrow.

The Wonderboys sit 2nd in 5.10 after their 3-2 win over Skills City on Sunday night, and Whizz is eager that the right players are recruited, whatever division the Wonderboys are in next season.

"It certainly isn't easy [planning for Division 4 and Division 5] said Whizz, "but there are some areas that will need improvement regardless"

Midfielder Maurice Meredith has announced his intention to retire at the end of the season, and despite the development of academy product Matthew Hill, Whizz is likely to delve into the transfer market to find a replacement. If the Wonderboys are promoted, they will receive around 35m from their sponsors, and fringe players could be sold to help generate further funds.

"Maurice retiring will definitely leave a whole in our midfield, and there are one or two other positions we are looking at" said the Whizzers boss.

Whizz also hinted that the Wonderboys would look for younger signings if the team were to remain in Division 5, and confirmed he was in regular contact with various clubs to investigate possible acquisitions.

Late goal puts Wonderboys 2nd

Thrilling win gets Whizzers in promotion place

Billy Whizz's Wonderboysn moved into the top 2 for the first time this season, as they narrowly beat top placed Skills City by 3 goals to 2.

With 5 players out injured, Whizz named the same side that ran out 4-3 winners against Bohos B on Friday night, and his team started the better of the two, with Fribo and Cort both missing chances early on. However, the visitors grabbed a deserved lead when faithful club servant Maurice Meredith seized onto a quick pass from Luke Groves, and slid past the onrushing keeper. Although the Whizzers are in good form, a win at Skills stadium was widely regarded as a step too far, and the Albion were clearly delighted with their early lead. The first half finished without Preda really being tested, and due to Milky Milky drawing at 8KONLY, the Whizzers were in 2nd place at the half time break.

Nevertheless, just like Friday night, their lead was quickly squandered after the interval. Lineker responded quickest to a Britain free kick in the 49th minute to level the game up. Whizz's frustrating was evident, although he would have settled for a point, no doubt, at that stage. His team retook the lead on th 59th minute, when captain Fribo fed through Luke Groves, who made no mistake with the finish, and showed why, despite injury problems, he is a real asset for the Wonderboys.

The visitors managed to slow down the pace of the game after the goal, and it was only in the last 10 minutes did the hosts begin to stir. 2 free kicks from Linekar drew saves from Preda, but other than that, Skills could find no way through, and thus the game looked destined to finish 2-1. Nobody could have predicted the drama to come.

In the 91st minute, Beckwith scored against the Whizzers for the 2nd time this season, and he fired home, much to the delirium of the home faithful. There was silence from the visiting fans, and similar looks of dejection on the faces of the Wonderboys players. However, every team has an inspiring player, and it is without doubt that Grove is the Whizzers. Some superb skill in the 93rd minute took him past his man, crossing delightfully to O'Reilly at the back stick, who headed home, despite mistiming his jump.

The value of that goal was clear, from the celebrations of the Wonderboys players and staff. The referee blew up there and then, confirming a dramatic and crucial victory for Billy Whizz's Wonderboys.

Trio depart club

Billy Whizz's Wonderboys can confirm the departures of Vladmir Nemic, Antony Albright and Qu Yintou.

It was decided that they were surplus to requirements, and would therefore benefit both the club and the players if they were to find a new club. Nemic played 10 times for the Whizzers in 3 seasons, and a fee of 2.4m was received for the Slovakian midfielder. Allbright was a product of the Wonderboys youth academy, and is the first to be sold. Yintou signed 8 weeks ago, and never featured.

The management staff at Shitters Palace would like to wish the three all the best in their future playing careers.

Whizz breaks silence

Boss faces press after Whizzers up to 3rd

Billy Whizz's Wonderboys boss Billy Whizz spoke to the press for the first time in a fortnight after last nights thrilling 4-3 win over Bohos B at Shitters Palace. It wasn't his longest, or his most eloquent, but fans will be hoping that it marks the beginning of a 'back to normality' state of affairs at the club.

His team seemed visibly nervous in the closing stages, yet they scraped through to get the 3 points, and as Whizz pointed out, it's starting to get to the point in the season where results are more important than performances.

Thats not to say the Wonderboys didn't have their moments though - some scintilating attacking football was played at times, and in balance, they deserved the win. After an entertaining, but goalless, opening 20 minutes, the Whizzers took the lead through Konz, who struck the ball sweetly into the corner from inside the box. The first half meandered past after that, with both teams seemingly content to go into the interval with the current scoreline.

The second half began disasterously for the hosts, as both bin Whizzer and Konz were taken off injured, and they conceded shortly afterwards. Turner beat Thorpe, and volleyed home beautifully from 25 yards. The Wonderboys pushed to retake the lead, with Grove missing 2 golden opportunities. The goal eventually came on 71 minutes, but lasted a mere 50 seconds. Maurice Meredith showed once more how much he will be missed next season, with a beautiful pass to Mick Richards, who had more than enough time to find the net, however straight from kickoff, Bohos scramled the ball into the net, with Gallacher finishing off great work from Turner.

However, the Wonderboys support still seemed buoyed from their team's temporary lead, and the hosts kept the pressure on, with Fribo and O'Reilly both denied by Pitman. The Wonderboys took the lead for the third time in the match when substitute Cort produced a wonderful cross for Luke Grove to head home, and Shitters Palace exploded. 3 minutes later - the Whizzers scored their 4th for the 2nd game running - O'Reilly getting on the end of a Fribo corner. There was yet more drama to come, however, as Walker powered home for Bohos on the 87 minutes. Then, in the 93rd minute, Prada pulled off a wonder save to stop a certain goal from Turner to give the Whizzers a crucial 3 points.

"It's been a difficult week" said Whizz, "but I'm delighted that we've managed to keep the good form going on the pitch. There's been a lot of things said by a lot of different people, and I think it's a real credit to the players and staff that they've been able to ignore a lot of the stick the club has got, and ensure they're producing some great football and good results."

"We've had a hell of a lot of injuries as well this season, and when you're consistently missing 2 or 3 players it's easy to lie down and give in, but we've never done that, nobody has. We'll be missing 5 when we play on Sunday, but we'll name a team and go to win."

"Behind the scenes, there's still a lot of things we need to work out, myself, the chairman and the rest of the board, but where it matters, we've done extremely well, and something everybody wants is promotion, which is why the results on the pitch are the pinnacle of all things at the club"

Boardroom turmoil overshadowed by pitch success

Board members 'singing off different hymn sheets' as Wonderboys crush Arsene-all

In one of the most chaotic weeks in Billy Whizz's Wonderboys history, a run of 3 wins in 3 means that the Whizzers are now just 2 points from the 2nd promotion place in 5.10

Rumours of disatisfaction first spread a week ago, when we revealed that young striker Thomas Avery had been placed on the open transfer list, following a request from manager Billy Whizz. Unsubstantiated claims that Whizz had compared the club's strategy to the speed of a caravan then muddied the waters, and now further complications have been added, as the club announce they have rejected a 15m bid for Avery.

A senior source told us today that there is still 'mass confusion' in the board room, with everyone 'singing of different hymnsheets'. The source added that Whizz had 'done almost a complete U-turn....but doubts remain'

All this comes as a great surpise, as the Wonderboys have a good reputation off the pitch for sticking to a clear strategy, and was successful in winning the Team of the Season vote. However, emergency talks between Whizz and Richardson became something of a daily occurence, and it is still unclear how the club plans to go forward, and if any other players will be added to the transfer list. The club's silence on the matter is almost deafening.

On the pitch, the team have flourished. A 4-2 win away against Arsene-all means that the gap is now just 2 points between the Whizzers and 2nd. Confidence amongst the players seems to be high, and there seems once more to be a belief that promotion to Division 4 is a genuine possibility.

The Wonderboys face Bohos B tonight in a rematch of the opening game of the season, which ended in a 1-0 defeat. Leese, Inchingolo, Jones and Rooney are all out, but Lewis Moody will deputise at right back, and Thorpe will continue in defensive midfield.

Wonderboys prepare Avery sale

Uproar predicted as young striker is offered to clubs

Billy Whizz's Wonderboys are preparing for a backlash from fans, after senior directors and chairman Jack Richardson last night agreed to make striker Thomas Avery available for transfer.

The reputation of Avery has grown in recent months, and he is currently the team's top goalscorer, hitting the net 7 times so far this season. However, it is believed the club have decided upon a change in direction for the club, and as such there will be less emphasis on the development of home grown talent.

One source told the BWW blog that he was 'hugely suprised' by what he had learnt over the last couple of days, but said the chairman has 'the club's long term interests at heart', and that although there was some initial reluctance, Richardson had managed to persuade board members that the change in strategy was for the good.

Richardson met with manager Billy Whizz 2 days ago in a regular meeting, and it is thought Whizz was unhappy with the lack of money available for transfers, and suggested changes for the club.

It is unclear currently what role Avery plays in the situation. He is regarded as one of the club's biggest assets, yet would not damage the first team if he was sold as much as more senior players, such as Luke Groves and Morten Fribo.

It is thought Avery was offered to clubs at around 25m, and should have plenty of admirers at that value, raising the possibility of a price auction if Avery is placed on the transfer list.

Selection headache for Whizz ahead of key games

3 out for Super Starzz match

Billy Whizz's Wonderboys manager Billy Whizz will be unable to name his best XI yet again, as injuries take their toll on the Whizzers squad.

Striker Luke Groves, and midfielders Paul Jones and Gavin Inchingolo are all out for tonights game away against Super Starzz FC, the first of three games in a 'vital week' for the Wonderboys.

If Whizz is to keep his favoured 3-5-2 formation, a central midfielder will be the replacement for Inchingolo, who's natural deputy is Jones. The Wonderboys have no other defensive midfielder available, so central midfielder Paschev could make a first start, or indeed new signing Antonio Wielgas.

In last night's friendly against Speedy Pete FC, Wielgas played in an attacking midfield role, although it is not known whether Whizz will go for the same setup tonight. David Thorpe slotting in as an additional centre half is another option. Up front, top scorer Thomas Avery will partner Mick Richards.

The Wonderboys currently sit in 7th position, 4 points behind 2nd place, and play Super Starzz, 8K O.N.L.Y, and wybourn allstars this week in the league.
