Whizz: Adaptability is key

Wonderboys boss undlerlines economic lessons learnt

Billy Whizz's Wonderboys manager Billy Whizz admitted that the economic forces in the TM world have taken him by surprise, and says the club will move forward with greater awareness of the financial situation.

When asked what how he had developed as a manager this season, Whizz replied "The importance of the game finances was underestimated by myself; perhaps more than ever in this difficult climate. It just goes to show how finances dictate every decision made in the day to day running of the club, and other than the 270 minutes on the pitch, the club is basically controlled by economics"

"Perhaps before, we were rather small minded in our approach, now we realise how we must take stock of the world situation, and then change if necessary, and I think we've started to do that by downgrading our YD....it's no longer sensible for a club of our size to have such high facilities, it's much cheaper to buy off the Transfer List"

As a student in Economics, Whizz is quick to express his thoughts on how the TM economic situation would develop, but revealed that the club had been too slow in changing their strategy in line with the slump in prices:

"In hindsight, yes, mistakes were made. We concentrated on our own strategy, and didn't realise that everybody moaning would actually affect us - it does, finances affect everyone. The signs were there to be read, but the chairman and I thought we had a good foundation, and were building upwards, in the future we will be much more wary of how things will change, and where it will leave us, both on and off the field. Adaptability is crucial, you have to have the ability to change if necessary"

"In the short term, I think it's fair to say that funding will be short over the next season or two. We have to decide whether to grin and bear it, and accept that things won't be great for a while, or to be proactive, and invest in some younger players while prices are cheap. It's a really difficult decision to make, but being stuck with a team full of 30 year olds is no good in today's world; previously it's fine, but now it's clear that younger players from the TL is the better way to go."

"We can't change instantly however, and the chairman and I have to decide whether to drop the oldies completely, or see if we can achieve our goals with an older team. In reality, a balance will have to be found I think"
