Wonderboys in touching distance

Strong showing puts Whizzers inches away from Division 4

Billy Whizz's Wonderboys overcame their nerves to see off Derby County FC at Shitters Palace tonight, meaning they are 5 points ahead of nottingham forest fc, with just 2 games to play.

Having looked so comfortable for many weeks, Wednesday nights defeat to Milky Milky seemed to bring pessimistic Wonderboys fans to the fore, and there was a somewhat tense atmostphere around the Palace before kick off, which in turn seemed to transfer to the players. Both teams had early opportunities, yet were wasteful, with Konz, Fribo and Richards all forcing Derby keeper Moru into saves, while Leese was forced into a full stretch dive to keep out Jordan's header.

However, the home fans were given reason to celebrate when Mick Richards fired home after nice work by Maurice Meredith, meaning there was a little more optimism durind half time.

The second half was a scrappy affair, with both teams failing to orchestrate attacks, despite decent spells in possession. Konz headed straight at Moru shortly after the interval, and Leese reacted well to a long range effort from Smith, but they were the only two shots on target in the second half, until Richards popped up again to squeeze home his 12th goal of the season in the dying minutes of the game, securing a crucial victory for the Whizzers.

Even a late injury to Konz, ruling him out for the remaining two games, didn't cool the celebrations, and Shitters palaced rumbled, as the Wonderboys faithful realised Division 4 football was within their grasp. Just 2 points are needed to secure promotion, and possibly less if other results are favourable. One gets the feeling that the match at home against Super Starz on Sunday may just be a sell out,
