Wonderboys start with unlikely win

Dynamo Doran 1-3 Whizzers

Billy Whizz's Wonderboys began their first ever campaign in Division 4 with a smash and grab victory against Dynamo Doran, with Luke Groves and Phillpe Konz (2) getting the goals.

The visiting supporters also saw Mikhail Kohklov make his Wonderboys debut, and he made one assist in a fine performance.

Kohklov was involved in the first chance of the game, as he headed Morten Fribo's corner wide, despite leaping well. On 9 minutes however, the Whizzers shocked the home crowd. Fribo showed great vision to find Luke Groves with a through ball, and the 31 year old made no mistake when he was clear through.

Fribo almost doubled the lead moments later with a freekick, although Dynamo keeper Blair was able to keep it out. The tide then seemed to turn, and the hosts began to dominate proceedings. Leese was called into action when Hardings had a clear opportunity, and Hawthorn, bin Whizzer and Fribo all made crucial tackles when an attack was developing.

There was nothing that could be done to stop the equalizer, however. Striker Stephene Baert fired a rocket of a shot into the corner of the net, and it seemed at that stage as if a point was all the Whizzers could hope for.

The start to the second half quickly dispelled any worries the Wonderboys supporters may have had, however, as Konz and Kokhlov both had decent efforts on goal. Konz seemed to be the main man for the Whizzers, as he drew a smart save again from Blair, this time from a long range effort. It was third time lucky for the Frenchman though, as after fine play from Kohklov, he volleyed home from close range.

This seemed to bring the Wonderboys into a more defensive position, with the home team seeing a lot more of the ball. The Whizzer's defending was pretty resolute, however, including Leese in goal, who made two saves from Johnson, on 73 and 78 minutes. The hosts were made to regret their wastefulness though when Hill slipped through Konz to score his 2nd and the Wonderboys 3rd, much to the delight of the visiting supporters.

Doran than camped themselves around the Wonderboys box for the closing stages, but the Whizzers held on to secure a win that takes them to the top of the league after 1 game.
